It´s hot outside, your throat is longing for an icecold beer but since the rivers are periodically low and sometimes way too warm there is something that is far more distracting. Ah, I see - you got me right...the lacking dose of pumping adrenalin; you need it so desperatly that you allready abused your neigbours cat as a casting target. Well, actually there are numerous alternatives - for example carp, pike, catfish to name just a few. If your fed up carrying heavy tackle, go´n search for some ultra light recipients that can handle the warm conditions. Barbel is a thankfull and wellknown alternative, but what about Sneep (Chondrostoma nasus)? Give it a try - I´m sure you will love it. Sneeps are ambitous fighters, always pulling a pretty decent amount of line from your reel.
(Angry Sneep hates landing net)
Sieg River, one of Rhein´s biggest tributary streams, is probably one of the most productive Sneep-Streams in all over Germany. On a bright sunny day you can see thousands of them, what does not simultanesously means that you get fish after fish. Seeing them is one thing, getting a hook up another. Another synonym for Sneep is Undermouth, according to it´s mouthposition - I´m telling you this, because this anatomic fact is the tricky factor!
As I said upon, Sneep is a groundfish and groundfeeder, so It´s quite logical that we have to get down. Due to the fact that we have to use heaviest tungsten nymphs and streamers, your Ultra Light Tackle has to be well adjusted. I´m using a 2 weight (Loop Opti Creek 2wt) because it gives me more of a kick. Far more important - keep your focus on the line - finally the line is your casting weight that delivers the hook-armed package. Get a line with a short an quite agressive taper - in my opinion there´s only line that get´s the job done on a 2 weight: Loop OptiStream WF2F - I don´t have to mention that it fit´s 100% with the rod. (That day I used a OptiCreek WF2W which is way shorter in order to eradicate the totalweight to a minimum - the whole 2 weight combo shown here has a totalweight of less than 170gramm)
Jigs, heavy Bonefish flies, Salmon jigs, Peeping-Caddis, Zug Bug, Prince, Scuds and Czech-Mates are a short excerpt out of our flyboxes. Enjoy the following pics then prepare your vise to fill up you flyboxes. Tight Lines!
